Anyone can have this question in mind why they need a Guru? When God is within us and everywhere in surroundings then why a Guru? We all are the children of that divine power whenever we will need Him He will help us. Then what is the need of a third entity between God and us? We may also say that I take my ideal deity as my Guru or refer someone who never had any Guru but he still reached to enlightenment.
Definitely there are few exceptions like ‘Ramana Maharshi’ in the history who never had any Spiritual Guru. But do we are Ramana Maharshi? Or we are such a great devotee, yogi or God loving personality that we can witness His direct presence and receive knowledge directly from that ultimate source.
It is possible to reach the goal in our spiritual journey without the aid of a Guru. However, it is lot easier

with the grace of a Guru. For most people the requirement of a Spiritual Guru is absolutely indispensable. Guru (Spiritual Master) has a supreme place in our tradition. The word Guru is made of two parts: Gu means darkness or ignorance and ru means dispeller or remover. Thus Guru literally means dispeller of ignorance. The ignorance is the darkness and the Guru represents the light, the elimination of darkness. So the one from whom we seek the light is called the Guru. Of course, the light is already within, but this inner light is in dormant state which needs a spark to ignite it first then travel to its highest state of luminance. We therefore need initiation from the external source of light which we accept as our Guru. Gurus can be male or female, old or young, and come in all shapes, sizes, castes and complexions.
The Guru – disciple relationship is perhaps the most sacred and loving relationship in the world. As the Katha Upanishad states “To many it is not given to hear the God within. Many, though hear of it”. Do not understand it. Wonderful is he who speaks of it. Intelligent is he who learns of it. Blessed is he who, taught by a Guru is able to understand it”. Thus, we may look upon the Gurus as road maps to our spiritual journey. A Guru will wake us up and may even walk with us side by side, but no Guru will carry us on his shoulder and deliver us to final destination. That we have to do ourselves as declared in the Bhagavadgita by jagadguru (teacher of the universe) Krishna thus: “One should lift oneself by one’s own self.”
Guru breaths in a divine factor and help us to transform our mundane life into a sacred existence. The Guru-disciple relationship is not of today and tomorrow or of this life only. It goes on and on, because you do not evolve in one day alone. Regardless of how badly you may behave during the years of your training, it matters not, because you are always a disciple to your Guru. However smart or intelligent enough you are to the external world, but always remember that you are here to be transformed and get better both worldly and spiritually. And you need a constant guidance and supervision from your Guru to reach to this state of achievement. From time to time, owing to ignorance, clouds come over the sunny season of life. You can never be stable or correct when your mind is clouded by ignorance and selfishness. As these both make your thoughts weak. One mistake can pull you down completely and it may be hard to raise your hand again.
You can check and test a person whom you wish to accept as your Guru as long as you want before accepting him/her as your Guru. Once accepted never think wrong about your Guru or regret. Doubt in your own Guru is a deadly sin with no repentance. The Guru may be disreputable or he may be a saint, but the disciple always loves him and believes in him. His Guru is his life. He may be handsome or ugly; he may be kind or strict to you, all that is necessary that he is working for your total transformation. If the Guru has accepted you as his disciple, that alone is the light. Through that you grow and obtain your final goal.
It is not to be doubted; you can try, but without the Guru, life is incomplete. In order to experience fulfilment in life, the heart or the spirit has or have another base and that is the base of Guru’s emotional and mental planes. It is nothing like the love you have felt for anyone else. Guru and disciples do not consider the physical or emotional factors; they only consider that which is deep and transcendental.
Guru and disciple are like one soul living in two bodies. One is always aware of the other on the spiritual plane. External communication is no longer always necessary here, because the disciple does not function on the level where he needs the Guru’s physical presence. He has the Guru’s spirit within him which illumines the dark corners of his being. What need is there therefore to talk to him or see him often.
